Getting Started - Understanding cancer and your chemotherapy: Offered at various clinics and hospitals every week. This class is offered to new patients that are just beginning their chemotherapy treatment. The key of the class is to maximize your therapy while minimizing your discomfort. The class begins with an orientation to chemotherapy and prepares you for the changes ahead. Develop a plan to deal with the challenges and side effects. Our goal is to give you a sense of regaining control and optimism during treatment. Please consult with your oncologist's office for class times/days or contact 503-528-5236.

 

Family Caregiver Seminar: Fall 2008 from 8:00-2:30pm.

Topics covered:

Tips on providing physical care to those who need assistance.

Comfort measures and nutritional support

Social and emotional aspects of caregiving

Community Resources and agencies

Mobility and skin care issues

Transfers, bed mobility and wound care.

Lunch is provided. Please RSVP to 503-528-5236.

 

Strategies for Living with Cancer: This is a six-week program and participants are expected to attend all 6 sessions.

Topics covered:

Affecting positive and productive change in your life while dealing with illness

Disease related problem solving

Managing emotions as well as medications

Benefits of exercise and nutrition

Cognitive Symptom management

Communication Skills

Partnering with your physician

Advanced directives and using community resources

Legal and Financial Seminar: Fall 2008 from 9:00-2:30pm.

There is no charge for this program.

Topics include:

Maximizing your benefits - Insurance Plans and drug benefits

Social security disability insurance and supplemental security income

Benefits in the workplace - FMLA, Short & Long Term Disability

Dealing with the Financial Impact of Cancer

InPower Program: Offered on an ongoing basis every Tuesday & Thursday from 1:30-3:00pm at Mittleman Jewish Community Center in SW Portland. Must pre-register and have doctor's approval. You will work with an oncology nurse and a personal fitness trainer to customize an exercise program just for you and your needs. You will work on your own program in a group setting, so you have the support and encouragement of other cancer patients and survivors. Please call 503-528-5236 for more information, to have a packet sent to you, or to register.
